Trying to digest the multitude of economic reports published during the first quarter leaves lingering questions as to whether we are in a period of economic growth, or not. U.S. economic growth regained speed in the first quarter, but not as much as expected, which could heighten fears the already weakened economy could struggle to handle deep government spending cuts and higher taxes. GDP expanded at 2.5% annual rate, the Commerce Department reported in late April, after growth nearly stalled at 0.4% in the fourth quarter, way below the expected 3.0% growth rate of leading economists.
